Twice as nice! Jason and Oliver
Gibbins win their second RRWT!
By Ken Johnston, Rainy
River Record
After day 1 of the 10th annual
Rainy River Walleye Tournament (RRWT) it looked as
though Team 16 were poised to win it all, but what a
difference a day can make! Team 16, John Blight and
Sean Gaudry quit fishing at 11:15 a.m. on day 1
having 16.16 lbs. of walleye in their live well. The
pair said that the main reason they quit was that the
two big fish they had in the well actually flipped
and flopped around causing the live well to stop
working. Their one day weight was big enough that
they almost would have won the tournament in 2001,
2002 or 2006 when 17.3 lbs., 16.3 lbs. and 18.7 lbs.
were weighed in over two days to crown champs.
At the end of day 1 Blight and Gaudry held more than
a two pound lead over former champion Doug McBride
and his new partner Zack McBride who had 13.9 lbs.
But just behind them were perennial local favourites
Fred Foulger and Dickie Byrnes at 13.8 lbs.
Rounding out the top five on the first day was Yogi
McCormick/Tom McCormick (12.69 lbs.) and former
(2004) champs Jason and Oliver Gibbins (12.59
lbs.)
As tradition goes, the top five from day 1 were held
back on day 2 until the very end to create suspense
and excitement and boy did it ever. When former
champs John and Ethan Swentik (2006) weighed in 15
lbs. on day 2 in perhaps one of the biggest come
backs on tournament history, the crowd wondered who
else might be holding a big basket that was yet to
weigh in. The Swentiks catapulted from 58th position
to the top of the pack with a total weight of 18.23
lbs. They eventually finished 6th.
Long time tournament anglers Jamie and Jeremy Westman
ended up with the highest weight of the tourney
before the top five were brought into the tent to be
weighed. However they held less than a four pound
lead over Blight and Gaudry.
Jason and Oliver Gibbins were the first of the five
to weigh in and they did not disappoint the crowd
weighing another solid basket at 10.70 lbs. for a two
day total of 23.29 lbs. Yogi and Tom McCormick then
came through the tent but when they reached the scale
they only had one fish weighing .90 lbs which saw
them eventually finish 24th overall.
Doug and Zack McBride also were nearly skunked the
second day only weighing one fish to add 3 lbs. which
dropped them to 11th overall. The next pair of
anglers, Fred Foulger and Dickie Byrnes, have
traditionally had great day 1’s at the RRWT and
proof of that is the fact that they have been in the
top five boat parade five of the ten years the RRWT
has run. However, every year except for this year
some have said they have been “cursed.”
Well the curse was broken this year as they had two
solid days weighing in three fish and adding 8.59
lbs. to their total which would see them finish
second with 22.39 lbs. First on day 1, Blight and
Gaudry were the only thing left standing between the
Gibbins and being the first team to ever win the RRWT
twice. While they had four fish the second day, they
only added 3.76 lbs. and that sent the crowd into a
frenzy as they realized the Jason and Oliver Gibbins
were the new champs and the first repeat champs.
While the top two teams were only separated by
9/10ths of a pound, their actual fishing experiences
were completely opposite.
Jason Gibbins said, “We caught more fish in two
days this year than in all the other years
combined.” He noted they caught almost 40 fish
this year.
On the other hand Dickie Byrnes said, “What we
weighed in is what we caught.” Had they caught
one more fish, even a little one they may very well
have been the champs this year. The Gibbins team
fished west both mornings and then east in the
afternoons. Most of their fish they caught jigging
and Jason said they switched up colors frequently
using pink, orange and silver. “We only caught
one good size fish trolling with crank
baits.”
“We just could not believe there were as many
fish in the river as there was given the warmer
temperature of the water than the lake,” said
Jason.
When asked how it felt to be the first to repeat as
champs, Jason said, “The only reason we kept
coming back is because people kept saying there is no
way you can win it again.”
Jason and Oliver do fish many tournaments but for the
most part they fish bass competitions. “The
only walleye we do is this one and the one at Wigwam
(near Baudette, MN).
This win was their first top finish of the year and
Jason said that most of the money they won ($15,000)
will be used to pay bills for the entire summer. They
did finish 2nd at the Kenora Bass tourney and 7th in
Sioux Narrows.
Dickie said, “We thought we might have them
with about 9 lbs.” Well they were just shy of
that. “But we are happy we have broken the
curse and this is the best we ever did!” Byrnes
and Foulger fished west of Rainy River the entire
tournament and used lead head jigs for the most part.
They caught two of their fish trolling, the rest
jigging.
The biggest fish on Day
1 ($500) was caught by Kevin Marchuk and Jason
Amundsen (7.67 lbs.).
The biggest fish on Day 2 ($500) was caught by Darren
and Dave Armstrong (6.93 lbs.).
Hidden Weight Day 1 ($300) was 3.22 lbs. and was won
by Gerry Jolicouer and Anthony Mason (3.22 lbs.).
Hidden Weight Day 2 ($300) was 6.93 lbs. There was at
tie at 6.4 lbs. between Bill Godin/Ralph Galusha and
Frank McWhinnie/Frank Grunewald.
The Early Bird prize ($1,000) was won by Rick and
Mark Thompson.
The Top Princecraft Team ($1,000) was John Blight and
Sean Gaudry.
The largest overall tournament basket of fish
($1,000) was caught by John Blight and Sean Gaudry on
Day 1 (16.16 lbs.).
The River Champs (top team fishing both Emo and RR
tournies) ($600) was Wayne Angus and Rick Pruys.

River walleye kings!
Bill Godin and Ralph Galusha win 9th RRWT
By Ken Johnston
Editor
It was a weekend of mixed elements
that saw Bill Godin and Ralph Galusha of Devlin win
the 9th Annual Rainy River Walleye Tournament
(RRWT).
Early on day 1 (Friday), the weather was absolutely
horrid. Heavy rains, lightning and hail saw the
beginning of the day put on hold for about 15
minutes. Anglers sat in their boats while about an
inch of rain drenched them and kept their bilge pumps
running. Many said it was absolutely miserable.
But every coin has two sides. The weather was bad but
the fishing was really good that day with most of the
big fish being caught early in the day, just after
the storm had passed.
Godin and Galusha were in 7th place after day 1 with
12.54 lbs. just 3.16 lbs. behind former champs Mike
Vacura and Marnie Korpi of Roseau who had a huge
basket at 15.7 lbs.
But the flipside of the coin saw the weather turn
very summerlike on day 2 (Saturday). Dry anglers
found fishing to be a real struggle. Many reported
catching few walleye and those that did catch more
than their four fish said that there were many small
ones; under 12 inches. That struggle held true for
the top day 1 team. They only caught two small fish
to weigh in 2.04 lbs. and drop from 1st to 10th
overall. “We just had a really bad day of
fishing, catching more logs than anything,”
said Korpi.
For Godin and Galusha, they were really shocked to
win. “We did not think we would hold out
knowing there were some really good anglers coming
through the tent,” said Godin. “This is
unreal. Never after winning (the) Emo Walleye Classic
(this spring) did we think we would win Rainy
River,” added Godin.
After weighing in another 10.68 lbs. on day 2, Godin
and Galusha were the top team with only the top five
from day 1 to come. The first of the five to come
through the tent, Dean and Brian St. Pierre, of Rainy
River, had 12.88 lbs. on day 1 which included the
biggest fish of the tournament at 8.08 lbs. But they
struggled on day 2, weighing in only one fish and
dropping to 29th overall.
Tom Briggs of Baudette and Rob Dorry of Warroad came
next. Last year they finished third and were hoping
to win it all this year. They had 13.02 lbs. on day 1
and added 8.74 lbs day 2; not quite enough to unseat
the Devlin duo.
Fred Foulger of RR and Dickie Byrnes of Fort Frances
made another journey through the tent on day 2 having
13.12 lbs. on day 1. The pair were hoping to break
the “Day 2 Curse” so many people have
said they have on them. They have probably been in
the top five boat parade more times than any other
team and in just about every case were pretty much
skunked on day 2. Well they did not get skunked, but
only weighed in 5.48 lbs. (three fish) dropping to
7th overall.
Dan Hanson of RR and Chad Jackson of Fort Frances,
were 2nd on day 1 with 13.66 lbs. As it turned out
they were the last real threat to bumping Godin and
Galusha. They weighed in four fish but like so many
anglers on day 2 they just weren’t as big as
the first day’s catch. They added 6.88 lbs. to
finish 5th overall with 20.54 lbs.
With Vacura and Korpi tanking on day 2 Godin and
Galusha were declared the 2007 RRWT Champs and the
2007 River Champs, having the largest combined weight
from EWC and RRWT.
Also finishing strong on the weekend was Cliff
Westover of RR and Mark Jodoin of Pinewood. They had
nice fish both days weighing in 11.14 lbs. on day 1
and 10.52 lbs. on day 2 to finish third with 21.66
lbs., 1/10th of a pound behind Briggs and Dorry who
finished 2nd with 21.76 lbs.
Dan and Bryce Godin also had two consistent days,
registering 10.86 lbs. on day 1 and 10.32 lbs. the
second day to finish fourth with 21.18 lbs.
The top team, Godin and Galusha, said that they did
pretty good in prefishing. They went west on day 1
fishing two spots with one yielding the best results.
Again they went a couple of miles west on day 2,
catching a few nice ones early on. Then in the
afternoon they decided to make a run east. “It
was a good move as we were able to trade some fish
up,” said Godin.
With the rough weather and wind on Friday they spent
most of the day jigging. “It was too hard to
troll as we had to control the boat in the
wind,” said Galusha.
Day 2 they mixed it up, trolling and jigging. Galusha
said that they had the best results on pink jigs and
shiners.
“These tournaments are hard to win,”
added Galusha.
“This will be hard to top. We had hoped for
River King,” said Godin, “To win both is
once in a life time.”
Godin said that is very thankful that his nephew
Bryce Godin (who finished fourth) shared some of his
secrets for river fishing with him this year. He is
also grateful to his dad Almer Godin who helped them
in prefishing and made their sandwiches for the
tournament.
The prize payout was as follows:
1st-Bill Godin/Ralph Galusha $15,000
2nd-Tom Briggs/Rob Dorry $7,500
3rd-Cliff Westover/Mark Jodoin $3,500
4th-Dan and Bryce Godin $2,800
5th-Dan Hanson/Chad Jackson $2,000
6th-Doug Jorgenson/Al Wolanicki $1,400
7th-Fred Foulger/Dickie Byrnes $1,300
8th-Rick and Mark Thompson $1,200
9th-Ed Carlson/Ron Skyberg $1,100
10th-Mike Vacura/Marnie Korpi $1,000
11th-Ted and Leo Heyens $700
12th-Bill Stay and Bryan Barron $600
13th-Doug McBride/Steve Ballan $500
14th-Bob Jenson/Dana Kaliska $400
15th-Sean Westman/Dave Oldakowski $300
Editor’s Note: Rick Amundsen, who finished 2nd
last year, and his partner Clayton Keister, were in
12th place after the weighins. However, they were
disqualified by the RRWT committee for having
allegedly docked on the U.S. side during the
tournament, which is contrary to tournament rules.
Hidden Wt. Day 1 (4.17 lbs.) Dennis and Colleen
Barnard $300
Hidden Wt. Day 2 (8.84 lbs.) Rick and Mark Thompson
$300
Blaine Ivall Memorial Big Fish Award Day 1-Dean and
Brian St. Pierre $500
Tom Kreger Memorial Big Fish Award Day 2-Dave and
Darren Armstrong $500
River Champs Bill Godin/Ralph Galusha $600
Top Princecraft Team Dan Hanson/Chad Jackson
$1,000
Lionel Robert Memorial Biggest Basket of Tournament
Mike Vacura/Marnie Korpi $1,000.
The angler’s boat raffle (a 12’
Princecraft) was won by Dickie Byrnes.
The RR Playschool Boat was won by Ken Mason of Rainy
River. Winning cash in that draw was Jody Gouliquer
of Bergland-$1,500, Paul Clark of Fort Frances-$1,000
and Dan Hanson of RR-$500.
A two day bet between Shawn Hartnell and his dad
James Hartnell over who’s team would be higher
in the standings after the tournament ended was
decided on the stage at the RRWT. James and his
partner Dorothy Leininger finished 26th while Shawn
and his partner Sonny Gibbons came in 50th. Losing
the bet Shawn agreed to have his head shaved. Well
the shaving turned into a fundraising effort for the
Cancer Society. People lined up to pay to shave
Shawn’s head. While he was being shaved he
offered money to have James shave his too. He did and
in the end the pair raised $928.41 for the
cause.

Shelby Tymkin wins
annual Kids’ RRWT
By Ken Johnston
Editor
The
Kids’ RRWT is nearly as big and just as
exciting as the main event.
This year there were 71 kids registered for the
fishing tournament which is held just off the
Government Dock and RR Marina Docks every year.
While last year’s champ Perry Lachance was
there bright and early to stake out his winning spot
from last year, he didn’t have the
fisherman’s luck with him. He was skunked but
the anglers just next to him would prove to be the
lucky ones this year!
Caiden Fileccia started things rolling catching a
7.9” Crappie, just down from last year’s
champ.
Rachel Ball, who fished the west side of the Govt.
Dock then caught a 21.5” Northern Pike.
Then right next to Lachance, Jaden Gustafson thought
he had a snag when he pulled up a 9.9”
walleye.
A little while later huge drama unfolded right next
to Gustafson. Shelby Tymkin thought she had a fish.
When volunteers came to help her net it, it appeared
that she and two of her neighbouring anglers all had
their lines tangled up. For a moment they thought
that was all that was going on then they noticed one
line was swimming away. Volunteer Brent Anderson went
to net the fish and nearly lost it. Once on the dock
volunteer John Homer measured the feisty fish. Tymkin
caught a 28” Northern Pike and cinched the 2007
championship.
Named Most Promising Female Angler was 12 year old
Rachel Ball. Most Promising Male Angler was 10 yr.
old Jaden Gustafson.
Winning the Lionel Robert Memorial Trophy for Most
Sportsmanlike was Alyssa Spence.
Fifteen other competitors were randomly drawn to win
rod and reel combos. They were Emma Noga, Madison
Wier, Cole Tymkin, Kendra Moen, Jack Wood, Jacob
Halverson, Thea Holland, Evan Lowes, Keagan Murray,
Ed Plumridge, Shauna Moen, Cody Peterson, Damon Short
and Jasmine Holmes.
All anglers received a goodie bag for
participating.

The 8th Annual Rainy River Walleye
Tournament is now in the record books. The Tournament
which ran Friday and Saturday, Sept 22 and 23 this
year had a full field of 84 two-person teams and a
waiting list of seven additional hopefuls.
Although fishing was a little tougher this year
without the record breaking lunkers of last year,
their was still some pretty respectable fish with
John and Ethan Swentik of Rainy River landing the Big
Fish Friday with 6.48 lbs and Gerry Jolicoeur of
Rainy River and his son-in-law Anthony Mason bringing
in Saturday's lunker at 9.16 pounds.
It was a very competitive Tournament with about
five pounds separating the first thirty seven teams
by the end of fishing on Friday. Every one was
shooting for first spot and only needed a couple of
big ones on the final day . Jorgenson and Wolanicki
of Rainy ended the first day leading the pack by less
than a pound, but a respectable Saturday catch of 5.7
lbs knocked them back into fourth spot. Crowd pleaser
11 year old Bryce Godin of Rainy River nearly upset
the apple cart with a terrific 10.78 lb stringer
Friday, but slipped to 12th spot on day 2 when his
father Dan Godin couldn't find that fourth fish. No
word on if Bryce is looking for a new partner next
year.
With the top five teams separated by only 1.6
pounds, Swentik and Swentik edged out Rick Amundsen
and Jamie Gowdy of Baudette and Warroad by a mere
6/100 of a pound to walk off with the grand prize of
$15,000.00.
For all the results check out our Scoreboard page
and watch for more stories here and in you local
media, great supporters of the RRWT.
Held annually, the 8th Annual RRWT is scheduled
for September 21 and 22, 2007. Many teams have
already made their initial deposit, so if you want a
spot, print off a Waiting List Application from our
Forms Page, submit it and get set for some great
walleye action |
Eleven year
old Bryce Godin of Rainy River, threw a real
scare into all those professional anglers
when he threatened to scoop the RRWT with a
first day catch of 10.78 lbs. He and his
father Dan finished with a respectable 12th
place just 5 lbs out of first. |
Gerry
Jolicoeur and Anthony Mason brought in this
9.16 lb lunker for Big Fish of the Tournament
on Saturday morning, but were shut out for
the rest of the day to finish in 11th
place.

With all
84 slots for the 2006 Rainy River Walleye Tournament
filled and a waiting list, the RRWT continues as
popular as ever. Even with the addition of three new
spots and the replacement of four teams, for a total
of seven new teams the RRWT still has a waiting list
of nine additional teams. So if you want a future
spot in the RRWT be sure you get your application in
now. Waiting List Application forms are available for
download on the ‘Forms” page of the RRWT
website at www.rrwalleye.com
.
With 58
of the 84 teams’ entrance fees fully paid up,
the RRWT held their early bird draw for $1000.00 on
April 11, 2006.
Dennis
Sirman of Rainy River did the honours of pulling out
the winning ticket at 8:00 pm in the Rainy River
Legion.
And the
winner is Team # 4, Bruce and Brenda Andrew of
Thunder Bay.
The
Andrew Team placed 38 in the RRWT 2005. Perhaps with
that extra cash they can do a little extra
pre-fishing, take some lessons, or buy some new
tackle for this year’s RRWT. We’ll look
for them right up there at the front of the
pack.
This is
the 8th Annual Rainy River Walleye
Tournament. It is held the last full weekend in
September. This year’s events take place
Thursday, Friday and Saturday, September 21, 22, and
23.

2006
The
8th Annual Rainy River Walleye Tournament
is set to go in 2006 from Thursday, September 21
through Saturday, September 23. The RRWT is held the
last full weekend in September with the main
change this year the move from fishing days on
Saturday and Sunday of the weekend to Fishing
Friday and Saturday. The RRWT will kick-off
with Parade of boats Thursday evening, September
21
Organizers
felt the change in fishing days would better
accommodate anglers and tournament volunteers work
and travel schedules and make the tournament timing
more consistent with other tournaments.
There is
a full compliment of angling teams signed up for RRWT
2006, with four new teams replacing teams that have
cancelled. In addition three new spots have been
added to this year’s RRWT, expanding the number
from 81 to 84 teams. All those entrants have been
drawn from the existing waiting list.
Prospective
anglers who wish to enter their names on the waiting
list for a spot in this or future year’s RRWT
should print out the Waiting List Application Form
from the Forms section of this website, fill in the
required information and submit it with the required
deposit via mail to the RRWT.
An
initial set of rules for the 2006 RRWT may also
viewed on this website. Rules for 2006 are very
little changed from 2005, with the exceptions of the
dates. Starting times may also be adjusted. There may
be additional rule changes to the rules posted
throughout the year.
